Day 119 — August 14th

Hello, this is Joy. Ron and Kendra made it to the Shelter Cove Resort area yesterday (Friday). This area was less than 2 miles off of the PCT trail… so no catching or hitching a ride was needed. They had a resupply box to pick up there and they waited in line for a washer/dryer. There was also a coin operated shower, which they took advantage of (these crack me up — Ron said they put $7 in and you scrub really fast, as they water runs for about 4 minutes, lol!). Shelter Cove did have a small restaurant, but I’m not sure they ate there. They spent about 4 hours getting done what was needed and then headed back on the trail late in the afternoon.

The hikers have picked up their pace — averaging 25 miles a day. I haven’t asked lately, but can only assume that Kendra’s knee is doing OK. There is water more available to them, so they don’t have to carry huge amounts of water, which helps tremendously with their pack weight. Really, it depends on the stretch where they are at — it varies everyday. I didn’t ask about the smoke, so don’t know how that is going for them. Again, it changes each day, and during the day, with the winds.

I received this picture yesterday morning, so they passed the 1900 mile marker.

They have a 4 day (probably) hike to their next stop, which is called Santium Pass. From there, they can get off and go to Bend or Sisters, OR. One’s 22 miles from the trail and the other is 15 miles — so transportation will be need. I’m not sure where they are going, but they plan on taking a zero (rest) day there. Both towns/cities are larger so they will resupply there. There is also a fire ahead of this point, and the PCT is closed for a section, so they will be getting off the trail and going around at this point, but again, I only receive texts so not sure what their plans are.

As they are inching North, they are getting closer to a family friend from Harrison, who lives in Portland — Thailyr Scrivner Jaegersen. Thailyr is Cammie’s age (went to school together, played basketball and hung out) and they went to the same babysitter all of their lives together. So Thailyr, Ron just asked me to start a text-conversation with you, so he will have your contact and will be reaching out!

That’s all I got for now — not much new going on with them. They just keep walking…….

    • Hi Terri – Bucket here – Sage was determined to get us into Sisters, OR tonight. So after hiking 24 miles in windy, cold, rainy conditions we made it to Santium Pass and got a hitch to Sisters! We’ll be in Bend, OR tomorrow and Thursday. Thank you for following our journey and commenting – we appreciate it!

  1. Well it is good to know things are still going well for you two. I am still working in the yard. 2. Bucket. You two are remarkable to me. Following your journey with my partner assisting me on the technology I feel as if I am rooting for my favorite football team in the fourth quarter. I have been thinking of both of you often hoping the fires blow away from you and nature is good to you both as you enjoy the incredible views that can only be seen from the trail. Continue your excursion with care. Enjoy all that you can and keep up the good work. -Spike

    • Hello Mike! Bucket here – good to hear from you! Probably our biggest concern at this point in Washington is the weather getting bad. So we’re watching that as closely as we can. Still one day at a time and keep pushing to Canada! Thanks for your comments.
