Good morning, Joy here. I wanted to share a short note with you all — very heart warming. Ron and Kendra pushed on their hike on Saturday to get to the roadway at Walker Pass. It was a 21.5 mile day for them. At about mile 19, I received a text from Ron asking if their hotel reservation could be bumped up a day (which it could), that they were going to make it to the road at around 6pm. He also mentioned that Kendra was working on trying to get them a ride. A bit later, I received another text saying that cell service was sketchy and they still had 2.5 miles to go and Kendra wasn’t having any luck getting a ride. A ride that is 25 miles away — so pretty significant to ask someone, right? (Btw, no Uber/Lyft and no bus service.) These towns and communities all have FB groups with Trail Angels that offer assistance. I posted a msg on the PCT Hiker FB page and literally, within 4 minutes, I had a ride secured for Ron and Kendra. She even offered hosting them at her house, but they already had a hotel reservation. ‘Pancake’ was waiting for them when they stepped off the trail. Not only did she transport them into Ridgecrest, she handed them a package — a homemade supper, which they ate as soon as they got checked into their room. Ron said it was delicious lol. So grateful to Pancake who helped my family out last night — what a wonderful experience for Ron and Kendra!
They will actually be staying in Ridgecrest an extra day — taking a zero day from hiking. They need to rest, eat and resupply for the 3 days it will take them to get to Kennedy Meadows, which is a significant milestone on the PCT. This is the end of the desert and the beginning of the Sierra.
I’m sure Ron will post this weekend and hopefully download lots of pictures. I told him he needed to step up his game on the pictures and to also turn off the ‘video’ setting when taking a picture. The one second video kinda drives me nuts, lol. But I’m sure looking at your phone in the desert is not easy!
Take care everyone and thanks for following Bucket and Sage!!!
Pancake is true Angel. What a great story, it actually made me tear up a bit.
