Day 22 — May 9th

Joy here. End of the 3rd week on the trail for Ron and Kendra. Still no phone service, but I did receive a text from their Garmin late last night, asking for help securing lodging for Monday night. They will be in the Big Bear Lake area then, at mile marker 266 or 275, depending on where they will get off the trail. This seems to be the norm in getting lodging… you need to plan ahead and estimate arrival date to secure a room. Most of these areas are very small and don’t have a lot of rooms available. So, we are getting into a pattern here and it’s been working out.

When they arrive into Big Bear, it will be 6 days since last lodging, so they will be ready for a shower, laundry and some real food. Also, this area offers a small and a large grocery store, so they will be doing their own resupply there.

I think they are making good progress. It seems they are getting in 15-18 miles in, per day. But it’s hard for me to estimate — the Garmin sends information by a ‘crow’s mile’, which is a straight line, from point-to-point. It does not account for all of the zig-zags of the actual trail.

Speaking of the Garmin, I can’t image anyone going out into the woods, wilderness, hunting, biking, etc. without one of these GPS trackers. In my opinion, this has been the best purchase of equipment. And easing one’s concerns is priceless, right?!

Hope everyone has a relaxing Sunday and Happy Mother’s Day to all mother’s out there!
