Bucket here – Joy got Sage and I a room here at the Cave Springs hotel in Dunsmuir, CA. Dunsmuir is 4.5 miles north of the PCT at Interstate 5, and we were able to get a ride from a native of this area that assist hikers when he’s in the area.
We walked into town and went to a restaurant for an early dinner, post office, and resupplied with food at a grocery store for our next 6 days of hiking.
We have hiked since July 14th with smoke in the air. It has impacted all of the views over the past 200 miles of hiking. We’ve continued to take photos of what should be tremendous views, but you’ll see that they are covered in smoke. It has been very hot and dry the past 6 days since we got got back on the trail. There have been water carries many of those days. Today the weather broke and it was cold and rainy all day. But we’re hearing the weather will return to hot tomorrow when we get back on trail.
This morning we passed 1500 miles on the trail! We will continue to push towards Oregon. We have 2 more scheduled stops in Northern California before this happens. We continue to take this hike one day at a time and take nothing for granted. There are many things that could remove us from the trail – so we feel blessed for each day that we can continue this hike. This is very hard work. “Fun” or “Enjoyable” are not words to describe this. Perhaps “satisfying” is a proper word.
We have downloaded our photos and we love to read your comments. Thank you for following our trek!!
Stay safe! Your pictures are stunning, even with the smoke!
Hi Terri – Bucket here – we just got into Etna, CA so got some cell service to catch up on messages. Staying safe is our top priority – and “dodging” all of these wildfires is exhausting! But we continue to take it one day at a time. Thank you so much for following our journey and commenting – we appreciate your support!
Hey Bucket, Sage, and Joy back home. Great to catch up on the adventures here. Been in the Pacific NW last couple of weeks hiking in the Olympics and doing the Loowit Trail around Mt. St. Helens with my niece and her husband–just a 2-day backpack, but rugged, beautiful, and unique to walk through the slowly recovering blast zone and those part much less impacted by the eruption over 40 years ago (yeah, that long!). Glad to read and see you guys making it through on the trail, the fires and smoke sound miserable, hopefully Oregon will be clearing up as you are probably there now, and the rest will be lovely as fall starts to settle in. Take care, and each day at a time. Doug
Hey Spider-Man – Bucket here – your hike around Mt. St. Helens sounds awesome! Thanks again for following our journey and for your support and comments. We appreciate it!
