Bucket here – Sage and I got a hitch into this little recreation area that is 2.5 miles off the trail. Joy was able to get us a night at the Haskin Inn, which is a B&B. There is a small convenience store attached to the Inn and there was enough food selection there for Sage and I to resupply for 5 days. There is no laundry here and our clothes were filthy. So we showered with our clothes on and have them drying in the room. They’ll probably still be wet when we put them on tomorrow morning, but will dry quickly in the heat.
There is record temperatures in this region right now. It’s been up in the mid-90’s every day since we left Sierra City. We’ve had some big climbs this week- 3000 ft. when we left Sierra City and another 2500 ft climb all morning today.
All day yesterday and part of this morning we hiked through a section of wilderness that was wiped out by wild fires. It has been closed in recent years and just reopened this year. It was the ugliest hiking we’ve had on the entire trip. Just burnt trees everywhere. Like hiking through hell! The trail was a fine powder of dirt and ash that covered you everywhere- so we were filthy ( combined with all the sweat from the heat). It was probably not healthy breathing this stuff the past 2 days either. But hopefully better scenery ahead!
We passed the 1200 mile mark a few days ago and should hit 1300 miles in the next couple of days.
Joy and Cody are flying out on July 18th to visit with us for a few days – so we’re looking forward to that. Trying to find a meeting location in the middle of nowhere is a logistics challenge! But we’ll figure it out.
That’s it for now. Still taking it one day at a time and addressing the challenges as they come at us. Thank you for following our trek and commenting!
Wow! You guys have seen it all! So sad to see the burnt out forests. It’s so exciting to follow your trek. The stamina you both have is truly inspiring. Jerry and I are greatly enjoying this exciting adventure. Thank you SO much for sharing this with us old folks. I’m sure meeting up with Joy and Cody for a visit will give you a boost to continue. We were wondering if you pass any hikers on the trail. Those climbs must take a lot out of you. You are our hero’s for sure. What a once in a lifetime adventure to share with each other! Take Care and God Bless.
Mary & Jerry
Hi Mary & Jerry – Bucket here – Joy picked us up last night and we are now in Redding, CA. So we have internet! I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying reading about our hike! It’s been quite a week trying to avoid the wild fires and related smoke. To answer your question- yes we do see other hikers out on the trail every day. Some days just 1 or 2 hikers, but other days we see many more. Thank you so much for commenting on this blog – we appreciate it!
