Well Ron and Kendra enjoyed their stay in Independence, CA and finally made it back on the trail today (Friday) after walking many hours (maybe 5-6 hrs) on the side trail, to get back on the PCT. They needed their resupply box, to eat in a restaurant, to sleep in a bed and certainly needed a shower, but it’s sometimes difficult to get off of the trail and into towns. They are so remote. And no Uber/Lyfts available. Someone needs to start a shuttle service out there in the summertime! I guess it’s all part of the adventure, right?!
I will share a photo with you that Ron sent. For me, it’s not a proud-parent moment! This is Kendra, who made a sign and holding it up, with her thumb out. Apparently, they wanted to go to the next town up, which was 40 miles north of Independence, which had restaurants and an outfitter and a large grocery store. (Where they were staying only had a Chevron gas station with a Subway inside.) There was a public bus but it never showed up, so they decided to hitchhike. They ended up not standing there long, as right next door at the Chevron gas station, they recognized someone filling up a U-haul moving van, so Kendra ran over and asked if they could tag along. (a friend of another hiker rented this van for a week and was hauling around a group of hiker-friends.) So, that was very nice of the driver to give them a ride. Last night, the bus did pick them up and take them back to their hotel. I’m not a fan of hitchhiking (and neither is Ron), so this was going to be their last resort, lol.
The next stop for them is 100 miles away, so they estimate it will take them 5.5 days. It will have a campground, with a store, restaurant, laundry and showers available, so they’ll sleep there one night, I’m assuming. This week, they will cross the 800 mile marker, so they are still moving along nicely.
Lastly, I did get to Facetime with them last night and Reggie (Kendra’s dog) got to see is mommy. Kendra got new shoes in Kennedy Meadows (about 88 miles prior) and she said last night she has had no more foot/ankle/knee pains, so hopefully the shoes corrected the issue. Thank goodness!!
That’s all for now.. everyone have a nice weekend, and the kids will keep on truckin!!
Oh my goodness! What an adventure. You two please stay safe and enjoy the trip. I will say my usual prayers for you. I look forward to hearing more adventures. Thanks Joy for keeping us up to date.
