Hello everyone, Joy here. I haven’t talked to the Ron&Kendra in many days, but I do receive texts, so I only get bits of info. But, I can tell from the Garmin tracking, they are burning up the miles this weekend. (they are actually ahead of their schedule now.) They made it into Hikertown on Saturday afternoon (late), where they picked up a resupply box. By my estimates, it looks like it was approximately 22 miles to get there. They rented a ‘bunkhouse’ which to me looked like a storage shed. No bathroom and no electric… just a cot. (it was only $10 rental, so you get what you pay for-LOL) Anyway, it allowed them to take a 3 hour nap (at least Kendra said she was napping) and then at 7:30pm their time, they set out again for a night hike. They got in another 12 miles during the night. Apparently, it’s common for hikers to hike that section during the night. They walk on top of the Los Angeles aqueduct, which is along the desert floor, with no water, no place to stop and camp and no protection from the sun, so you night hike. This was their first night hike experience, I think. They stopped around 12:45am their time. Then back at it at 6:30am, getting another 18 miles in. That’s a lot of miles!
Today, they will get into Tehachapi, CA, where they will have a hotel room – so, shower, bed and laundry. They will need to do some grocery shopping. And this town has several restaurant options for them to eat at. I’m sure they are ready for this. I believe they will only be spending one night here (not a zero day), unless they feel like they need an extra day off. This will put them at mile marker 566, which means they will have about 140 more miles before they get out of the desert and enter the Sierra. Not sure if this is good! They are making great progress, but Sierra has snow!! Hopefully, it will melt before they get there. Or most of it.
In the resupply box that they got over the weekend, it did have a new battery charger (lighter than Kendra’s first), so hopefully this will allow them to take more pictures and download more frequently. They’ve had to conserve their batteries on their devices a lot lately, with longer stretches between towns. So, this should help.
That’s all for now — Have a great day!!
sounds like things are going well for you, that is so good to hear. Ican’t imagine hiking at night, but it must be a good thing to do. I am still praying for the two of you. that is all I can do.. but prayer is the most powerful thing you can do. LOVE YOU TWO VERY VERY MUCH. Keep up the good work.and continue to taking care of yourself.talk to you later
Hello mom – Bucket here. We love you too, and thank you for your prayers. Kendra and I got a ride from a trail angel around noon today into Tehachapi- which is about 9 miles from the trail. We could not check in to our hotel until 3:30 pm, so we ate lunch at a bakery in town. Once we got into the hotel we done our laundry ( which involves changing into our rain suits and removing all other clothing) and getting showers. We then walked to WalMart (0.8 miles from our hotel) to buy resupply food for the next 5 days. We then had supper at a pizza place near our hotel with other hikers. We came home and have been packing our food bags (so heavy!). We plan to get back on the trail tomorrow morning as soon as we can find a ride back to the trail.
