Day 29 – May 16th – Zero Day in Wrightwood, CA

Bucket here – Kendra and I made it into Wrightwood yesterday afternoon.  Joy made us reservations at Grand Pine Cabins, one of the few places in town that offers laundry service.  The previous 5 days we have consistently hiked 20-22 miles per day.  We typically wake up before 5:00 am, start hiking by 6:00-6:30 am and then hike 12-13 hrs/ day.  Yesterday we climbed all day long working our way to Wrightwood.  We had an elevation rise of 5500 ft over a 24 hour period.  We peaked at around 8500 ft.  So a zero day here was well-timed and very helpful.

We have cleaned up and dried out gear, replaced a few items, purchased food resupply to get us to our next resupply point.

Coming out of Wrightwood there is actually a trail closure due to wild fires.  So we have arranged a ride to mile 403.0 – where we are allowed back on the trail.  So for now, we have to skip 39.6 miles of trail.  Unfortunately this is common on the PCT.  One hiker told us it sometimes takes years to make a section of trail passable again.  So I’m not sure if Kendra and I will be able to hike this trail section any time soon.

Thanks again for everyone checking in on our progress and commenting.  We truly enjoy reading the comments.

  2. Hi Bucket and Kendra, love the updates and hearing of the continued progress north. Think I began cold-soaking the oatmeal after about a month on the AT too, but I still kept my stove for dinner and a hot meal before bed. Kendra, you’re hardcore :), any progress on a trail name yet? You all are doing amazing out there, look forward to hearing about the next steps and hope you enjoyed the zero.

    • Hi Doug – Bucket here thank you for following our trek and commenting- we really enjoy the comments. No trail name for Kendra yet. She had a couple suggestions from other people, but she’s turned them down so far.
